Then we'll show you the best drills and visualisations to fix that underlying problem. Find out more about our Cause And Effect approach below.

DVD 2 - Open Water Swimming Technique

The second DVD contains specific open water swimming drills and exercises to make sure you can transfer the improvements you've made in the pool into an open water race environment. Don't underestimate how important this is!

Open Water
A feature of the boxset is the comprehensive section on open water swimming. Find out how to perform at your very best in your next triathlon.

Disk 2 is essential viewing for triathlon novices and experienced athletes alike.

We explain in detail what equipment you need in open water and how to use it correctly. We interview and watch demonstrations by several top elite open water swimmers to understand race techniques and strategies for starts, turns, drafting, pacing, sighting and swim exits.

Last but not least we explain changes you can make to your stroke technique to make it better suited for open water swimming. These will give your performances a further lift.

Get these things right on your race day and you'll have a perfect race!

Disk 3 - Full Training Plan and Training Tools

The PC and Mac compatible CD-ROM contains a full 8-Week / 25 Session Training Program for you to follow when you swim. These structured sessions break the monotony of continuous swim sessions and get you focused on improving your swimming technique with detailed drill sets and fitness sessions.

Each session of the training plan is carefully designed to improve your fitness and your stroke.

The Training Program strikes the perfect balance between technique training and fitness training. In conjunction with the DVDs it's the perfect way to improve your swim speed.

Within the Training Program there are 3 levels to choose from - Novice, Intermediate and Advanced – one will be perfect for you! The Training Program can be undertaken at any time – during the race season to get you in peak swim shape for your big race, or over the winter to develop your swimming to a higher level.

Also contained on Disk 3 is a Pace Calculator to work out target times for your training (in MS Excel format). A sample Strength, Core and Flexibility program and Swim Smooth's "Injury 101" prevention article.

Improving your swimming is very rewarding.

If you are a triathlete and your swimming is a weakness we highly recommend a specific training phase to focus on your swimming.

Cut back a little on your running and cycling for 8 weeks – follow the Training Program in the Boxset and get really focused on your swimming. You'll be amazed what you can achieve!

Afterwards, return to all-round swim/bike/run and get into top triathlon shape.

Our Straightforward Approach - Cause And Effect

Swim Smooth's stroke correction methods are straightforward and to the point. We use our deep understanding of swimming technique to explain the underlying causes of your stroke issues. This is true whether you're an intermediate swimmer working on your body position, body roll and alignment or an advanced swimmer working on propulsion and your feel for the water.

Fix The Underlying Cause

It's quite likely you've already tried improving an aspect of your stroke technique, maybe even several aspects. Most swimmers attempting stroke changes find it a frustrating experience, often feeling their stroke is deteriorating rather than getting better. Take a common problem for intermediate swimmers - a scissor kick that creates lots of drag. The obvious thing to do is determine that this person has a poor kick and therefore they should work on it with lots of kicking drills. This is unlikely to work because a scissor kick is an effect of something else, not a cause in itself.

By understanding the stroke a little deeper we know that scissor kicks are normally caused by a loss of balance from crossing-over the centre line on hand entry at the front of the stroke. By showing you how to work on and remove that cross over, you will automatically fix the scissor kick too. This is a simple example of the cause and effect approach to stroke technique correction which is contained in the DVD.

Throughout the boxset we use simple explanations and demonstrations to show you how freestyle should be performed. When looking at each aspect of the stroke we'll highlight common problems which you might be experiencing. For every issue we'll clearly show you the very best way to fix the underlying problem - rather than papering over the cracks.

There's no better or more straightforward way to improve your freestyle stroke than The Swim Smooth DVD Boxset. That's why it's become the benchmark stroke correction DVD in the swimming and triathlon world.

Independent Reviews for the Swim Smooth DVD Boxset:

awarded 5 out of 5 stars

“a must-have item for triathletes, freestyle swimmers, and any coach that works with those athletes".

“I've seen other DVD training tools in the past, many of which I found difficult to translate from the screen to a useful resource. Swim Smooth is different. This set effectively bridges the gap between theory and practical application, giving the viewer strong visuals on the proper technique, and how using these techniques will make you a faster and more efficient swimmer. Pick up your copy before everyone else in your age group does!”

“The amount and detail of information provided in this system makes it worth the price. If you aren't part of a Masters swim program, then this system is a must.” Paul Lieto, founder of trifuel.com

“The Three DVD Collection called Swim Smooth is a very good freestyle instructional series for the adult swimmer or triathlete who never benefited from competitive coaching. I would recommend Swim Smooth for the triathlete who is serious about developing a Training Program on his or her own without the benefit of a regular, experienced coach.” Brent Rutemiller, Publisher.

Triathlon & MultiSport Mag

“Fantastic! An Excellent resource for any swimmer!” Naantali Marshall, Swimming writer and Surf Ironman Guru.

UK Swim Teacher's Association

"I found the DVD easy to watch and understand and it has given me an even greater incentive to swim and assisted me greatly in improving my front crawl!" Lorrain Hewitt, winner of the Swim Smooth promotion at the London Triathlon.

selecting your HUUB suit

Each HUUB wetsuit has been rigorously developed for a particular stroke style by expert swimming coaches Swim Smooth and heavily tested by real swimmers at their test centre in Perth, Western Australia. From a tailored buoyancy distribution to the unique X-O-Skeleton, bicep and calf releases, find the right suit for you and it will fit your individual stroke technique 'like a glove'!

Sinky Legged Swimmers

sinky legged swimmer
Low lying legs in the water are a huge source of drag

Many triathletes without a swimming background suffer from low lying legs in the water creating a huge amount of drag. They also tend to cross-over the centre line in front of their head and drive their kick from the knee rather than the hip. Many good athletes suffer in this way and despite their power and strength on land find swimming a frustrating experience.

Experiences: You don't have a swimming background, find swimming with a pull buoy significantly easier and absolutely love swimming in a wetsuit!

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 3:5, Aerious 1/2 3:5, Axena 3:5 or Aegis 3:5

The buoyancy distribution of these suit will be a revelation lifting your legs right up to the surface, significantly more than any other wetsuit on the planet. The X-O-Skeleton resists any cross-overs in your stroke and helps you swim much straighter in open water. The bicep and calf releases improve your pull and kicking technique for increased speed. These features add up to a stunning improvement in performance, finally giving you the rewards you deserve in the water.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Arnie, Arnette, Bambino

Female Swimmer With Good Natural Buoyancy

good natural buoyancy
Women naturally have a better buoyancy profile than men and find achieving a good body position much easier.

Women are a different shape to men (you might have noticed!) and have a different buoyancy profile which needs a unique approach to wetsuit design. Not only is the distribution different but most women are more naturally buoyant overall than men and so require a less buoyant suit.

Experiences: You may find swimming in a wetsuit a little awkward or unbalanced, and may struggle to get a good fit as traditionally wetsuits have been designed for men.

Recommended suit: Atana 3:3 / Aura 3:3

Something special and unique just for you ladies, the HUUB approach to your unique needs is a thinner suit with less buoyancy. Easier to get on and off, and leaves you feeling balanced in the water when you swim, just like you do in the pool. As a bonus the thinner material is more flattering too, avoiding that chunky look of men's suits!

Please note: Although more rare than with men, some female swimmers do have sinky legs, if you do choose an Axena 3:5 or Aegis 3:5.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Female Kicktastics, Overgliders and Bambinos.

Dominant Leg Kick Swimmers

You rely on your kick but in a conventional wetsuit are brought so high at the rear you start to kick air.

Those with some swimming background as a junior often have quite a dominant leg kick when swimming. Without a wetsuit this kick keeps their legs high in the water but in a conventional suit the buoyancy in the hips and legs is too great and the legs are lifted so high the swimmer starts to kick air. Worse, being overly high at the rear leaves the swimmer feeling unbalanced and uncomfortable in their suit.

Experiences: You dislike wetsuit swimming and often feel unbalanced and restricted in a conventional suit. When training in the pool you may be slower with a pull buoy although this isn't always the case if you kick more from the knee than hip.

Recommended suit: male: Archimedes 1/2 4:4 or Aerious 1 4:4, female: Atana / Aura

These 4:4 and 3:3 (on the Atana / Aura) wetsuits have a neutral buoyancy profile so that you maintain the same body position in the water that you do without wearing a suit. This allows you to use your kick just as you would in the pool without lifting you too high at the rear so you start to kick air and lose stability. Using the exact same construction and technology as the 3:5's you have the perfect suit to maximise your speed.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Kicktastic

Long Over-Gliding Stroke Style

Despite working on their stroke efficiency, many Overglider's legs sit low in the water

Despite working hard on creating a long efficient stroke, swimmers with a long pause and glide have quite a low body position in the water. Whilst not as low as the classic leg-sinkers they will still benefit hugely from the getting their legs higher in the water.

Experiences: Although you enjoy swimming in a wetsuit you may find you don't perform as well in open water relative to your peers as you do in the pool. Waves and chop from other swimmers tends to stall you in the pause and glide in your stroke and may knock you off balance.

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 3:5, Aerious 1/2 3:5 or Aegis 3:5

You already benfit from swimming in a wetsuit but choosing a 3:5 will take your efficiency to a different level entirely locking your legs high up to the surface with its amazing buoyancy profile. The X-O-Skeleton maintains your stroke alignment so you cut through the water cleanly and keeps you tracking arrow straight between the buoys round the course. The bicep and calf releases make swimming in your HUUB much more like pool swimming, your kick and arm stroke feel loose and relaxed: amazing!

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Overglider

elite swimmer testing
Every HUUB Suit was developed and tested with our elite athletes in Perth Australia for devastating speed.

Experienced Swimmer

Always near the front of the field, experienced swimmers have good stroke technique from their days as a junior swimmer. They already have a great body position in the water and although nobody's stroke is perfect they have only minor areas to tweak and improve.

Your experiences: Confident and capable, you are looking for a suit with the best materials and neutral buoyancy profile to transfer you pool speed across into open water.

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 4:4 or Aerious 4:4

Fully featured HUUB suits employing a neutral buoyancy profile to maintain your horizontal body position without feeling unbalanced by shifting the buoyancy profile too much towards the rear. The X-O-Skeleton maintains your swimming posture and keeps your stroke perfectly aligned even if you fatigue during a race. The bicep and calf release system maintain the kick and catch technique you've refined over the years in the pool. The perfect suit to devastate the field!
