Manchester Clinic, M.A.C, Saturday 6th October '07:.jpg)
12 swimmers from around the Manchester area (and beyond) attended the first of our 2007 Swim Smooth UK Clinics. We were privileged to be using the Manchester Aquatic Centre for the first time and found this venue to be awesome for our Clinic's needs.
Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves and we were helped by coaches Jamie, Justin and Rob Harvey throughout the day - each of whom added great insight into the program structure. Here are some of the reviews:
I was impressed by how much information and personal attention was packed into one day!
Katie Benson
Very rewarding. Paul obviously knows his stuff but more importantly Paul is very good at communicating that knowledge to all types of swimmers. A very confident approach and that passes onto us – never felt anything was other than constructive information to make improvements.
Caroline Slaughter
This has been a productive and enjoyable day. I’ve improved already and there is plenty more to work on over winter!
James Benson
Really useful, re-enforced a lot but also provided a lot more information, tips and advice – it was great to get specific help on my stroke.
Penny Thorn
Excellent. I feel I am leaving with many development points for me to work on.
Daniel McPartland
I found it essential to spot areas of my stroke that I thought I had sorted but still need working on.
Phil Brown
Extremely informative, especially the 1-2-1 help when I got upset at being last on every drill and felt like I was holding people up. Learnt to swim my own swim, like I race my own race.
Emma Tilston
With the right person, teaching the right / correct way, it becomes much easier.
Mark Threadgold
Amazing! Now I know where I go wrong and now I know how to fix it!
Nick Marvin
Very good. Has clearly highlighted the next steps to improve my stroke.
Peter Cobb
I can’t wait to get back in the pool to swim again and looking forward to swimming with confidence in open water next year.

Leeds Clinic, Batley Sports & Tennis Centre, Sunday 7th October '07:
This was the second time that we have used the Batley Tennis and Sports centre near Leeds for a Swim Smooth UK Clinic (the first being in March 2006). The centre was excellent as per our last experience there with the aid of some very friendly staff.
One of Paul's great inspirations in the sport of swimming, Billie-jean Byrne (nee Clarke), was kind enough to help out on the day and provided some brilliant encouragement and motivation for all the swimmers - thanks Billie! Here are some reviews:
It has been good to meet people with similar interests and objectives. I feel that my learning curve is still at the beginning. However, it has shown me how much I need to work on to improve. Thanks
Monica Saez-Aros
Lots of information in general and general overview which were then personalised and put into practice.
Peter Thacker
Very good, nice mix of practical and theory. Well presented and the focus on 2 or 3 key things mean that I am more likely to persevere with them than if there were a large number.
David Hough
Really enjoyed the tips re. the importance of taking time to put on wetsuit correctly and ensure freedom of movement at shoulder and hips.
Philippa Moorhead
Intense, thought provoking and very practical day that will hopefully knock seconds off my time!
Christopher Moore
Very positive – helps to re-motivate yourself to improve!
Jeff Belt
Reminded me to stop, and re-measure regularly to monitor performance.
Mark Lingard
Really good, really productive.
Michael Babcock
Very enjoyable and informative with practical advice. They were very gentle with me – well recommended!

Windsor Clinic, Windsor Leisure Centre, Saturday 13th October '07:
The Windsor Clinic was fully booked within 5 days of us announcing the course and as such proved once again to be our most popular course with a good 10 people kept (unfortunately) waiting on the reserve list this time around - sorry guys!
We were lucky to have 5 coaches present at this course; Paul, Stuart and Graham (all of whom have previously done the Windsor Clinic), as well as elite athlete Harry Wiltshire and regular TRI TALK contributing coach Adam "Youngun" Young. It was a great day and we would like to thank the staff at the Leisure Centre for all their coordinated efforts. Here are some reviews:
Very good coaching and liked that it was tailored individually towards one’s own stroke.
Alex Bowden
Allowed me to find the next bits of my stroke that needed working on.
Zoe Leech
Very useful.
Doug Steel
Very enjoyable and informative – some good points to work on.
Don McGovern
I’ve attended a Swim Smooth Clinic before, but chose to attend again and will attend more in the future because the Clinics are so personalized and there’s always something for me to develop.
Simon Halroyd
(Simply) Excellent.
Paul Ashton
Felt better so quickly.
Matt Price
Excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable coaching with great feedback.
Alan Beggs
A great day – busy, with lots to take in, but some clear ideas to apply for my specific stroke.
Sion Elias
Great day with experienced coaches with down-to-earth-approach. Focus on freestyle as a whole but specific focus aimed at personal weaknesses.
Ian Platt
Croydon Clinic, West Wickham Pool, Sunday 14th October '07:
Paul's biggest fear is getting sick either before or during a Swim Smooth Clinic, due especially to the reliance upon his voice for the demonstrations and also for ensuring the flowing nature of the Clinic. Disaster nearly struck when he woke up on the morning of the Clinic with laryngitis, but supported by co-coaches Stuart Ashley and Graham Williams, ensured that the course ran smoothly and all athletes really enjoyed their day.
This was our first time at the West Wickham pool and again found the staff to be very friendly and supportive of some of our more "unusual" demands! Here are some reviews:
Of course it is a lot of technique to take in on one day – I think you need the Swim Smooth DVD to work on all aspects at home. The coaches did an excellent job. Well done and thankyou!
Frank Senders
It took the fear away and relaxed me about my problems spots and that they are correctable. I really enjoyed that Graham (Williams) worked with me individually to drill the hand entry – and also worked on the key to the beginning of the catch.
Dan Benson
The group working / observation exercise fostered a helpful team spirit. I was pleased the course didn’t draw too heavily from the Swim Smooth DVD material which I was already familiar with. All abilities were well catered for.
Des Adkinson
A very motivating experience, very professionally managed / led. Good balance of classroom versus pool, though would have liked perhaps one more hour in the water in the morning. Still – fantastic day and well worth the drive (200+ miles) and early start!
Donna Hicks
Video Analysis session was massively useful. Great day, hard work. So much to learn and now so much to work on. Thanks for the help from all the team!
Jeremy Dyer
Very informative and has given me some extremely useful drills to work on over the winter.
Andy Jones
Clinic enabled me to benefit from the depth of knowledge of the coaches I wouldn’t otherwise have access to – I felt it answered questions I didn’t know how to ask (i.e. how I was doing the catch in reality and not in my mind!)
Brian O’Sullivan
A really useful course. Great to be videoed! I’ll be back to work on my catch next year!
Wendy Quantrill
I really enjoyed the day and really appreciated the chance to interact with the coaches. Would recommend to friends interested in triathlon. Coaches were very helpful.
Brendan Cuddy
This was a great experience and thankyou for putting all the effort into covering all the technique points for openwater adaptation! I had a great day and got exactly what I needed! Thankyou!
Chantal Bohren
Very useful, much easier to view than explain.
