Catch Masterclass Reviews

“The Catch Masterclass DVD is a superb rendering of how to find and develop the sometimes elusive key element of freestyle swimming, the catch. It is focused on one main (and vital) element of good swimming technique, with plenty of detail, but simplified so swimmers can work on developing a better swimming catch step by step and not get lost in those details.
This DVD is another winner from the Swim Smooth coaches. Five Stars!

about swimming

“Your Catch Masterclass DVD is the best and most informative swim DVD on the market. It fills the gap left by so many coaches and clinics I've attended – not as yet Swim Smooth. The drills and explanations are really well arranged and to the point. I love everything that it contains. It's really making an improvement to my crawl technique, which I thought had reached a plateau."

Kamar Humphries

“Really is one of the best, if not the best swimming DVD I've ever seen. Well worth the 2 year wait ..the video footage is stunning and it's all backed up by superb content. To all swimmers and coaches out there you would be crazy not to buy this. It will unravel all the mysteries of how to swim more efficiently and provide you with all the tools necessary to do so."

Julian Nagi, L3 BTF Coach

“Superb resource, great combination of effective examples and rationale for triathlon specific/ open water stroke modifications. Absolutely love the evidence based swim coaching!
This DVD is without doubt the best of it's 'class' guys. Will thoroughly enjoy dipping into it regularly."

Fiona Ford, Triathlon Europe

“I watched it start to finish. It's very good stuff, we're going to start implementing many of the principles at the Academy. SwimSmooth did a smash-bang job on this one, and no, they're not paying me to say that. I'd highly recommend, it's already made me a better swimmer."

Ben Greenfield www.bengreenfieldfitness.com www.rockstartriathlete.com

“I am sure we have all seen some really useful underwater video footage over the years and YouTube clips of the swimming greats in action. But believe me these video sequences are incredible to watch time and time again."

Steve Casson, L3 BTF Coach

“Bloody marvellous is all I can say. Investment in your new camera equipment stands out immediately, clarity on my 12year old box of a TV was outstanding. Content was clear and more involved than I expected. Every component part of the stroke that sets up the foundation of a good catch set-up was well explained and particularly loved the comparisons from elite athletes to everyday age groupers.
Real time 1-2-1 of an age group athlete for coaches to watch your delivery was a nice touch. All in all I can't praise it enough."

Jon Riddell

“Received Catch Masterclass last week and we are eating it up. The shots are beautiful, make us want to get in the pool as soon as we can. One of the best aspects of the instruction is showing examples of three rather different swimmers. Because they are all highly successful the important lesson of tailoring a style to an individual is obvious. Double thumbs up!"

Included Development Sessions for the pool

With the Catch Masterclass we've included six Development Sessions for you to take to the pool and follow to work on your catch and feel for the water. These are in the form of PDF documents which you can print from your computer to take poolside.

Each easy to follow session focuses you on a particular area of your catch development - reminding you of the points and drills from the main DVD.

swim smooth Catch masterclass and our DVD boxset

The Swim Smooth Catch Masterclass overlaps slightly with our DVD Boxset in the area of catch development but offers a never seen before level of clarity, insight and detail over any other DVD on the market. The DVD Boxset was released in 2004 and is still our best selling product - since 2004 we've fine tuned and developed our methods and explanations with new drills and hi-def footage of elite swimmers. In the Catch Masterclass we have more time to focus in and explore all the subtleties, misconceptions and pitfalls which are holding back your catch development.

The result is a DVD which stands alone as a stroke development program but complements the DVD Boxset perfectly: If you like the DVD Boxset, you'll absolutely love the Catch Masterclass!

our Elite Swimmers

During The Catch Masterclass production we filmed and analysed the strokes of three world class swimmers:

Seven Time World Marathon Swimming Champion Shelley Taylor Smith, an incredibly fast and efficient distance swimmer with amazing catch mechanics. Her underwater stroke mechanics are near perfect and are something to behold.

Quick fact: During her career Shelley used to regularly beat the whole mens field and was ranked world number one for women and men in marathon swimming!

Shelley has retired from competitive swimming and is now a very successful motivational speaker and coach, find out more (and be inspired!) here: www.championmindset.com.au

Jono Van Hazel, Athens Olympian. With a personal best of 49.1 sec for 100m freestyle, Jono was known to have an exceptionally smooth, symmetrical and efficient freestyle stroke, even amongst the elite swimming ranks. Find out how he develops such a long smooth stroke and still maintains great rhythm and timing.

Quick fact: Jono is our poster-boy for the 'Smooth' swim type on our Swim Types microsite: www.swimtypes.com/smooth.html

Australian Elite Swimmer Melissa Benson, a devastatingly fast open water swimmer who perfectly epitomises the refined Swinger style of swimming. Although a pure swimmer, Mel shows us the style of stroke used by the vast majority of elite triathletes. Even with a very high stroke rate she still maintains a fantastic catch technique - in fact a great catch is the secret of the exceptional rhythm in her stroke.

Quick fact: Faster than any elite female triathlete, Mel's PB for 5km is under 60 minutes, equivalent to a 3.8km Ironman swim split of sub-45 minutes (without a wetsuit).

Our Money Back Guarantee

We're so confident you'll love the Catch Masterclass we guarantee your complete satisfaction. If you are dissatisfied with the Masterclass in any way, return it to us and we'll give you a full no-quibble refund. Simple as that.

selecting your HUUB suit

Each HUUB wetsuit has been rigorously developed for a particular stroke style by expert swimming coaches Swim Smooth and heavily tested by real swimmers at their test centre in Perth, Western Australia. From a tailored buoyancy distribution to the unique X-O-Skeleton, bicep and calf releases, find the right suit for you and it will fit your individual stroke technique 'like a glove'!

Sinky Legged Swimmers

sinky legged swimmer
Low lying legs in the water are a huge source of drag

Many triathletes without a swimming background suffer from low lying legs in the water creating a huge amount of drag. They also tend to cross-over the centre line in front of their head and drive their kick from the knee rather than the hip. Many good athletes suffer in this way and despite their power and strength on land find swimming a frustrating experience.

Experiences: You don't have a swimming background, find swimming with a pull buoy significantly easier and absolutely love swimming in a wetsuit!

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 3:5, Aerious 1/2 3:5, Axena 3:5 or Aegis 3:5

The buoyancy distribution of these suit will be a revelation lifting your legs right up to the surface, significantly more than any other wetsuit on the planet. The X-O-Skeleton resists any cross-overs in your stroke and helps you swim much straighter in open water. The bicep and calf releases improve your pull and kicking technique for increased speed. These features add up to a stunning improvement in performance, finally giving you the rewards you deserve in the water.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Arnie, Arnette, Bambino

Female Swimmer With Good Natural Buoyancy

good natural buoyancy
Women naturally have a better buoyancy profile than men and find achieving a good body position much easier.

Women are a different shape to men (you might have noticed!) and have a different buoyancy profile which needs a unique approach to wetsuit design. Not only is the distribution different but most women are more naturally buoyant overall than men and so require a less buoyant suit.

Experiences: You may find swimming in a wetsuit a little awkward or unbalanced, and may struggle to get a good fit as traditionally wetsuits have been designed for men.

Recommended suit: Atana 3:3 / Aura 3:3

Something special and unique just for you ladies, the HUUB approach to your unique needs is a thinner suit with less buoyancy. Easier to get on and off, and leaves you feeling balanced in the water when you swim, just like you do in the pool. As a bonus the thinner material is more flattering too, avoiding that chunky look of men's suits!

Please note: Although more rare than with men, some female swimmers do have sinky legs, if you do choose an Axena 3:5 or Aegis 3:5.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Female Kicktastics, Overgliders and Bambinos.

Dominant Leg Kick Swimmers

kicktastic
You rely on your kick but in a conventional wetsuit are brought so high at the rear you start to kick air.

Those with some swimming background as a junior often have quite a dominant leg kick when swimming. Without a wetsuit this kick keeps their legs high in the water but in a conventional suit the buoyancy in the hips and legs is too great and the legs are lifted so high the swimmer starts to kick air. Worse, being overly high at the rear leaves the swimmer feeling unbalanced and uncomfortable in their suit.

Experiences: You dislike wetsuit swimming and often feel unbalanced and restricted in a conventional suit. When training in the pool you may be slower with a pull buoy although this isn't always the case if you kick more from the knee than hip.

Recommended suit: male: Archimedes 1/2 4:4 or Aerious 1 4:4, female: Atana / Aura

These 4:4 and 3:3 (on the Atana / Aura) wetsuits have a neutral buoyancy profile so that you maintain the same body position in the water that you do without wearing a suit. This allows you to use your kick just as you would in the pool without lifting you too high at the rear so you start to kick air and lose stability. Using the exact same construction and technology as the 3:5's you have the perfect suit to maximise your speed.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Kicktastic

Long Over-Gliding Stroke Style

overglider
Despite working on their stroke efficiency, many Overglider's legs sit low in the water

Despite working hard on creating a long efficient stroke, swimmers with a long pause and glide have quite a low body position in the water. Whilst not as low as the classic leg-sinkers they will still benefit hugely from the getting their legs higher in the water.

Experiences: Although you enjoy swimming in a wetsuit you may find you don't perform as well in open water relative to your peers as you do in the pool. Waves and chop from other swimmers tends to stall you in the pause and glide in your stroke and may knock you off balance.

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 3:5, Aerious 1/2 3:5 or Aegis 3:5

You already benfit from swimming in a wetsuit but choosing a 3:5 will take your efficiency to a different level entirely locking your legs high up to the surface with its amazing buoyancy profile. The X-O-Skeleton maintains your stroke alignment so you cut through the water cleanly and keeps you tracking arrow straight between the buoys round the course. The bicep and calf releases make swimming in your HUUB much more like pool swimming, your kick and arm stroke feel loose and relaxed: amazing!

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Overglider

elite swimmer testing
Every HUUB Suit was developed and tested with our elite athletes in Perth Australia for devastating speed.

Experienced Swimmer

Always near the front of the field, experienced swimmers have good stroke technique from their days as a junior swimmer. They already have a great body position in the water and although nobody's stroke is perfect they have only minor areas to tweak and improve.

Your experiences: Confident and capable, you are looking for a suit with the best materials and neutral buoyancy profile to transfer you pool speed across into open water.

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 4:4 or Aerious 4:4

Fully featured HUUB suits employing a neutral buoyancy profile to maintain your horizontal body position without feeling unbalanced by shifting the buoyancy profile too much towards the rear. The X-O-Skeleton maintains your swimming posture and keeps your stroke perfectly aligned even if you fatigue during a race. The bicep and calf release system maintain the kick and catch technique you've refined over the years in the pool. The perfect suit to devastate the field!
