Improve Your Feel For The Water With PT Paddles

Question: What's the biggest difference between world class swimmers and mere mortals?

Answer: Their vastly superior feel for the water.

An elite swimmer's ability to 'catch' the water at the front of the stroke greatly improves their propulsion and so their speed.

PT Paddles improve your feel for the water.

PT Paddles are a great tool to help you develop more feel for the water. They do this by removing the influence and propulsion of your hand when you are swimming, whilst keeping your hand in the correct position.

Why would you want to remove the propulsion from your hand? By doing this, you are forced to start to use your forearm to generate some propulsion on the water. This is one of the secrets of elite swimmers, not only do they use their hands to generate propulsion but their forearms too - Perfect Technique!

Swim with PT paddles and develop an awareness of your forearm and how to develop propulsion from it. Remove the paddles and combine both sources of propulsion - from your hand and forearm. Voila! - better propulsion and feel for the water.

SS Head Coach Paul Newsome Introduces PT Paddles:

Much Better Than Fist Drills

You've probably tried fist drills - swimming the freestyle stroke with your hands held as fists. The idea of fist drills is to reduce the influence of your hand so you focus more on your forearm - the same principle that PT paddles employ.

Although the principle is the same, PT paddles are much superior to fist drills:

- The reduction of the influence of the hand is greater. The shape of the paddle means nearly zero propulsion from them.

- The hand is held in the right position instead of being scrunched up. This relaxes the forearm allowing you to freely engage it. It also relaxes your shoulders.

- With the hand held in the right position, you learn forearm engagement in combination with the right hand position. This means you can maintain that position more easily when you return to normal swimming.

PT Paddles keep your fingertips exposed to the water so you can feel the flow.

"Feel for the water" starts at the fingertips...

- The tips of your fingers are still in the water flow in the right position, not influenced by the paddles. Feel for the water starts right at the fingertips and you want to maintain and tune into this feeling.

- The back of your hand is in the water flow at the correct angle. This keeps you feeling the water flow over the back of the hand. Such feel is important in the main stroke on the arm extension, pre-catch.

- The back of the paddle is roughly dimpled where it touches the palm of the hand. This keeps your hands sensitised, ready for when you remove them.

A very different sort of swimming paddle.

When To Use The Paddles

PT Paddles are excellent for use during your warmup and drill sets. We suggest at first that you swim 100-200m with them at a time before removing and experiencing a better catch technique. You might repeat a cycle of PT-Paddles and then free swimming, swapping several times through.

Who They Are Suitable For

PT Paddles are ideal for intermediate swimmers who are comfortable with the basics of their stroke technique - breathing, body roll and their stroke timing.

They are also perfect for experienced and advanced swimmers. A great catch and feel is very important to improving your swimming technique and so performance.

All Swim Smooth products come with our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Many swimmers also report they are useful to develop a more continuous propulsion between the arms. This is great technique for open water swimming where chop and waves can cause you to stall during pauses in your stroke.

Who They Are Not Suitable For

We don't recommend PT Paddles to those learning the stroke, or those still struggling with fundamentals such as breathing and body position. Work on these aspects first, PT paddles will help you a little later.

Our Guarantee

All products that Swim Smooth sell carry our money-back guarantee. If you are not entirely satisfied with your PT paddles, return them to us in good condition and we will refund you. Simple as that.

“I find the PT paddles really useful for getting a good feel for the water and they're great for getting my arms turning over quickly for open water swimming.

I recently started using them in my warm up before I start a big race; they make me feel like I am wearing normal paddles when the race begins!”

selecting your HUUB suit

Each HUUB wetsuit has been rigorously developed for a particular stroke style by expert swimming coaches Swim Smooth and heavily tested by real swimmers at their test centre in Perth, Western Australia. From a tailored buoyancy distribution to the unique X-O-Skeleton, bicep and calf releases, find the right suit for you and it will fit your individual stroke technique 'like a glove'!

Sinky Legged Swimmers

sinky legged swimmer
Low lying legs in the water are a huge source of drag

Many triathletes without a swimming background suffer from low lying legs in the water creating a huge amount of drag. They also tend to cross-over the centre line in front of their head and drive their kick from the knee rather than the hip. Many good athletes suffer in this way and despite their power and strength on land find swimming a frustrating experience.

Experiences: You don't have a swimming background, find swimming with a pull buoy significantly easier and absolutely love swimming in a wetsuit!

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 3:5, Aerious 1/2 3:5, Axena 3:5 or Aegis 3:5

The buoyancy distribution of these suit will be a revelation lifting your legs right up to the surface, significantly more than any other wetsuit on the planet. The X-O-Skeleton resists any cross-overs in your stroke and helps you swim much straighter in open water. The bicep and calf releases improve your pull and kicking technique for increased speed. These features add up to a stunning improvement in performance, finally giving you the rewards you deserve in the water.

Female Swimmer With Good Natural Buoyancy

good natural buoyancy
Women naturally have a better buoyancy profile than men and find achieving a good body position much easier.

Women are a different shape to men (you might have noticed!) and have a different buoyancy profile which needs a unique approach to wetsuit design. Not only is the distribution different but most women are more naturally buoyant overall than men and so require a less buoyant suit.

Experiences: You may find swimming in a wetsuit a little awkward or unbalanced, and may struggle to get a good fit as traditionally wetsuits have been designed for men.

Recommended suit: Atana 3:3 / Aura 3:3

Something special and unique just for you ladies, the HUUB approach to your unique needs is a thinner suit with less buoyancy. Easier to get on and off, and leaves you feeling balanced in the water when you swim, just like you do in the pool. As a bonus the thinner material is more flattering too, avoiding that chunky look of men's suits!

Please note: Although more rare than with men, some female swimmers do have sinky legs, if you do choose an Axena 3:5 or Aegis 3:5.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Female Kicktastics, Overgliders and Bambinos.

Dominant Leg Kick Swimmers

You rely on your kick but in a conventional wetsuit are brought so high at the rear you start to kick air.

Those with some swimming background as a junior often have quite a dominant leg kick when swimming. Without a wetsuit this kick keeps their legs high in the water but in a conventional suit the buoyancy in the hips and legs is too great and the legs are lifted so high the swimmer starts to kick air. Worse, being overly high at the rear leaves the swimmer feeling unbalanced and uncomfortable in their suit.

Experiences: You dislike wetsuit swimming and often feel unbalanced and restricted in a conventional suit. When training in the pool you may be slower with a pull buoy although this isn't always the case if you kick more from the knee than hip.

Recommended suit: male: Archimedes 1/2 4:4 or Aerious 1 4:4, female: Atana / Aura

These 4:4 and 3:3 (on the Atana / Aura) wetsuits have a neutral buoyancy profile so that you maintain the same body position in the water that you do without wearing a suit. This allows you to use your kick just as you would in the pool without lifting you too high at the rear so you start to kick air and lose stability. Using the exact same construction and technology as the 3:5's you have the perfect suit to maximise your speed.

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Kicktastic

Long Over-Gliding Stroke Style

Despite working on their stroke efficiency, many Overglider's legs sit low in the water

Despite working hard on creating a long efficient stroke, swimmers with a long pause and glide have quite a low body position in the water. Whilst not as low as the classic leg-sinkers they will still benefit hugely from the getting their legs higher in the water.

Experiences: Although you enjoy swimming in a wetsuit you may find you don't perform as well in open water relative to your peers as you do in the pool. Waves and chop from other swimmers tends to stall you in the pause and glide in your stroke and may knock you off balance.

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 3:5, Aerious 1/2 3:5 or Aegis 3:5

You already benfit from swimming in a wetsuit but choosing a 3:5 will take your efficiency to a different level entirely locking your legs high up to the surface with its amazing buoyancy profile. The X-O-Skeleton maintains your stroke alignment so you cut through the water cleanly and keeps you tracking arrow straight between the buoys round the course. The bicep and calf releases make swimming in your HUUB much more like pool swimming, your kick and arm stroke feel loose and relaxed: amazing!

Recommended for Swim Smooth Swim Types: Overglider

elite swimmer testing
Every HUUB Suit was developed and tested with our elite athletes in Perth Australia for devastating speed.

Experienced Swimmer

Always near the front of the field, experienced swimmers have good stroke technique from their days as a junior swimmer. They already have a great body position in the water and although nobody's stroke is perfect they have only minor areas to tweak and improve.

Your experiences: Confident and capable, you are looking for a suit with the best materials and neutral buoyancy profile to transfer you pool speed across into open water.

Recommended suit: Archimedes 1/2 4:4 or Aerious 4:4

Fully featured HUUB suits employing a neutral buoyancy profile to maintain your horizontal body position without feeling unbalanced by shifting the buoyancy profile too much towards the rear. The X-O-Skeleton maintains your swimming posture and keeps your stroke perfectly aligned even if you fatigue during a race. The bicep and calf release system maintain the kick and catch technique you've refined over the years in the pool. The perfect suit to devastate the field!
